Abbey Rangers Minors were out for the first round of Minor League Division 3 on Sunday last. Taking on the newly formed amalgamation Naoimh Bhrid (Ellistown/Nurney) in Ballykelly in what proved to be a very tight local derby. The minors debuted new Green & Maroon colours in new jerseys sponsored by Galen Broughall and Branach Developments
Our opponents had the better of the opening exchanges and had established a 6 point to 2 lead heading into the last few minutes of the first half. A well taken goal by Eoin Sinnot followed by a quickly tacked on point left the bare minimum between the sides at half time.
Abbey Rangers continued to press in the second half and were ahead 1-9 to 0-11 heading into the last five minutes when Naoimh Brid countered with a goal of their own against the run of play. Our lads continued to press to get the result that their performance deserved and were rewarded penalty in the dying minutes. Alas it was expertly saved leaving the opposition as winners of a very sporting encounter.
The minors travel to Rathcoffey on Sunday next ( Feb 18th) to play St Edwards In round 2. Throw in is at 11.00am and all support is welcome
