Rathangan were the visitors this morning as Abbey Rangers played their first match of the season at More O’Ferrall Park.
With both sides needing a win, the first half was a case of both teams probing but very little scoring with the home team ahead by the bare minimum at the break in a 04-03 scoreline.
The match exploded into life immediately after the interval with the visitors scoring two quick goals and a couple of points.
Encouragingly the Abbey Rangers players responded to each with points of their own and while down by 5 early in second half were beginning to find their rhythm.
A trademark goal from Johnny Grace followed by a well taken point from a mark by Nathan Broughall steadied the ship and when Eoin Sinnot clinically dispatched a penalty the tide was well and truly turning. A second goal by Grace as well as another from Mikey Murphy saw Abbey Rangers safely home.
There were some excellent performances all round with Owen Sheedy and Paddy Neary instrumental in driving the team.
Next up is a challenge match against Moorfield this Thursday (Throw in in Ballykelly at 8.00pm) before travelling to Carbury for another must win match in round 6 of the league on Sunday April 7th.
