Meant to be a home game for Carbury this game was switched to Ballykelly due to the weather.
Both teams went into this round 6 league match knowing that victory was vital for their semi final ambitions. It was Abbey Rangers who started brighter with clever, controlled use of the ball resulting in good early scoring from Nathan Broughall and Luke Gill giving an early lead. A well worked team goal that moved through the lines at great pace was expertly dispatched by Paddy Neary putting us 1-4 to 0-2 ahead after 20 minutes.
Carbury travelled with intent however and had their own period of dominance striking 1-2 in the later part of the second half. Crucially the home side responded with points from Sean Behan and Neary again to leave us ahead by two at the break.
The second half was a real tough battle with defences very much on top - both teams had opportunities but the focus of the Abbey Rangers full back line of Alex Conroy, Owen Sheedy and Rory Nea gave the home side a great platform to work from keeping Carbury scoreless for long periods of the half. Nathan Broughall kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home team.Carbury never stopped coming however and were rewarded with a second goal to put them very much in the mix.
Abbey Rangers never once shirked the challenge which saw them secure the match and the crucial semi final spot on a scoreline of 1-10 to 2-05.
Sunday sees the team travel to Allenwood for another challenge against a division 2 side.
