Last Friday night our senior team had a massive victory against Moorefield. The combination of recent form, the jersey presentation and playing in front of a home crowd at last really created an air of anticipation around Friday night’s game.
Blessed with yet another sunny evening for league football, Kildangan started the game kicking into the stud end of the pitch. We had a very strong start to the game thanks to an opening point by Oisin Irvin followed by a Daniel Gilbert free. Cian Murtagh kicked us on with a point of his own followed shortly by a goal from the same man. Moorefield would them go on to score 3 points unanswered until Cian Murtagh scored a second point. However, a Moorefield goal brought Kildangan back down to earth making it just a two point game. But Kildangan we’re un phased and responded perfectly with Cian Murtagh scoring his second and third goals of the game. These two goals were crucial for Kildangan, stretching the advantage from 2 points to 8 points. Moorefield would yet again hit a purple patch scoring 3 points unanswered but a massive block from Stephen Murtagh which led to a Daniel Gilbert point shifted the momentum back in Kildangan’s favour. Daniel Gilbert then scored another two points on the brink of half time to really stretch our advantage with the score at half time being 3.08 - 1.07.
Straight out from half time Moorefield scored an impressive 1.02 despite an Adam Balmer goal line block (again) and a massive catch from Alex McCann. It was now just a 2 point game! At this stage, Daniel Gilbert grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and racked up another 3 points for Kildangan. A Sean Fitzgearld save followed by a Moorefield red card saw Kildangan really take control of the game. Joe Broughal, Killian Scully and Alan Donoher fended off several Moorefield attacks. Impact subs Bryan Adams (1.03), Sean Behan (1.00) and Dermot Hickey (0.01) had a massive influence on the game scoring 2.05 in the last 15 minutes of the game. Bryan Adams’ performance was reeling back the years to the 2020/21 season with an impressive 1.03 from him to seal the game.
It was a great win for Kildangan to send us into our next game full of confidence. We sit top of the table after two games and have come out as strong front runners in this year’s league. Oisin Irvin has big plans for the celebrations if we win the league and all the lads are raring for our next game out against Athy on May 10th.
Moment of the match: Cian Murtagh’s hat trick in the space of 10 minutes was super impressive in his first game back from injury. 2 points to go along with his 3 goals topped off a great performance by him.
Man of the match: Daniel Gilbert; he put in a real captain’s performance the other night. Not only did he score 8 points but he won every ball that came his way and put in a great defensive performance also. At several key stages of the game, Daniel was there with the scores to put us back in the lead. A really inspiring performance from Daniel yet again as he has excelled this year as captain.
