Sarsfields 2-10 Kildangan 2-1

Kildangan made the trip to league leaders Sarsfields last friday night for Round 5 of the U12 league. This was always going to be a tough test for Kildangan and our preparation were dealt a blow with the loss of Casey McEvoy McCullagh due to illness. The match was preceded by a minutes silence for a young Sallins U12 player Daire Plunkett who sadly passed away.

Sarsfields were quick off the mark with a point in the opening minutes of the game. Exchanges were ebbing to and fro and Sarsfields were rocked back on their heels when Kildangan forward Sean Casey found the net 5 minutes in. Sarsfields showed their ability as they scored a goal in reply and reeled off several points, many from long range. Kildangans defence were over-worked during this period but Alice Mahon, Abigail Fenlon, Darragh Coughlan and Aidan Casey in goals working hard to keep Kildangan in the game. We received a shot in the arm approaching half-time as Sean Casey once again found the net for Kildangan following a mix up in the Sarsfields full-back line. This left the half-time score Sarsfields 1-6 Kildangan 2-0 and all to play for.

The second half followed much the same pattern as the first with Kildangan competing well with Jack Fitzpatrick and Niamh Gleeson holding their own at midfield. A point from Oscar Law gave Kildangan hope but we were to rue a succession of missed chances when we were on top. Sarsfield finished strongly with several long range points and a late goal putting a slightly flattering look on the scoreboard. Kildangan can be proud of their performance with many upping their game to compete against what was mainly an U11 Division 1 team who had put 9 goals past Maynooth in the previous round. Sarsfield coaches noted after the game that it was the toughest game they had so far in the league. Other players to the show well on the night for Kildangan were Senan O'Tuama in a new position of centre back, Sam Worrell in defence and young Oscar Law coming of age up front showing for every ball and getting a nice point. Our next game is at home to Ellistown on friday week.
