Abbey Rangers claim a win in their first home game in Ballykelly in round 2 of the minor league.
Abbey Rangers opened the scoring through well taken points from Paddy Neary and Aaron Schofield and were up 0-04 to 0-01 in the first 10 minutes. Suncroft then cut through several defenders with a well timed run to rattle the back of the net taking away the lead Abbey Rangers had built up.
Abbey Rangers did not panic and tagged on 4 more points including 2 from frees coming from the boot of Nathan Broughail who has been clinical in front of the posts in the opening two games of the season. The first half finished Abbey Rangers 0-08 to Suncroft 1-04
After the break it was Suncroft who were the stronger winning both the aerial battles from the kick outs and the loose ball on the ground. They began to get a run of scores putting the Abbey Rangers boys on the back foot. A brilliant goal line save from Tadhg Perry and well taken points from Jamie Delaney and Paddy Neary kept Abbey Rangers in touch but they were under pressure going into the last quarter.
Abbey Rangers finally upped the tempo with a goal scored by Nathan Broughail followed by a second from Devan Abbey within 2 minutes.
Suncroft battled back again to draw level but with 1 minute to go Devan Abbey fisted the ball over the bar to steal the game for Abbey Rangers.
Best for Abbey Rangers on the day were Tadhg Perry in goal who made several saves and takes pressure off the team with his long range kick outs. Darragh Murphy, Paddy Neary and Tomas Dunne in defence worked tirelessly all day.
Cillian Reilly in mid field has brought an excellent level of fielding the ball and launching attacks to the team.
Up front Devan Abbey, Nathan Broughail and Jamie Delaney kept the scores coming with Kevin Nolan putting in a great performance on his first day out this season.
A great result to come away with the win sets team up in a good position for next weeks game away to Milltown.
