On Friday evening, Kildangan seniors lined out against Ardclough in Stephen O'Rourke Park to decide who goes through to the Tom Cross Transport Junior A Football Championship Semi-Final.
Ardclough opened the scoring as they were awarded a free in the opening minutes. Mark O'Donovan responded, as he usually does, with 2 points of his own, one from play and one from a free. Ardclough levelled the scores in the the 7th minute and at this stage it seemed as if Kildangan were in for a bit of a battle, however Kildangan's young guns saw things differently. Aaron Schofield, Paddy Neary & Luke McKenna all stepped up to the mark and kicked a point each before Kildangan's main man, Daniel Gilbert, kicked yet another 2-pointer. Despite Ardclough's scoring efforts, Kildangan were able to better anything they tried to do as Eanna Sherlock got his name on the score-sheet and Luke McKenna & Daniel Gilbert added to theirs. Eoghan O'Fearghaill & Alex Conroy stunted several Ardclough attacks in the 2nd quarter and the defensive performance in general must be commended. A black card just before half-time for Ardclough's star man, Kyle Kelly, saw Kildangan's hopes of victory grow stronger.
Half Time Score: Kildangan 0.11 - 0.05 Ardclough
Mark O'Donovan & Ardclough traded the opening scores of the half, much like the first and despite Ardclough's black card carrying over for the first 7 or 8 minutes of the second-half, it wasn't until after Kyle Kelly's reintroduction when Kildangan really decided to for the juggler. Kildangan introduced Bryan Adams at this stage and his experience proved vital in Kildangan's push for victory. Over the next 20 minutes, Aaron Schofield & Eanna Sherlock ruled midfield, Thomas Browne commanded from the back and up front Daniel Gilbert scored 5 points and Bryan Adams fired home 2 goals, skill is temporary but class is permanent as they say! Ardclough kicked the final 2 scores of the game and seconds before the final whistle, Mark O'Donovan was given his marching orders with a consolation black card (although it had no effect as the referee blew his final whistle seconds later).
It was an impressive performance by the Kildangan men in the Quarter Final and an even bigger effort will be needed this Thursday night as we face Robertstown in the Semi-Final at 7.45pm in Hawkfield.
Man of the Match: Daniel Gilbert. Daniel showed his skill kicking an impressive 11 points.
Well done lads!
