Suncroft 3-12 Kildangan 0-17

After the cancellation of round 1 fixture of the league last weekend, our seniors got their league campaign off to a narrow defeat in dry and sunny conditions in Suncroft on Saturday afternoon.

Suncroft playing down the hill and with whatever breeze there was, were faster to settle and hit Kildangan for 1-2 in the opening minutes.  Kildangan gradually found their way into the game and got off the mark with a Devon Abbey point after 10 minutes. This score sparked Kildangan into life and further scores added from Mark O Donavan and a Cian Reilly free, after a foul on Ryan Moran. Suncroft answered with a point of their own but Kildangan answered again with a trio of scores from Cian Reilly (free), Eanna Sherlock and Mark O Donavan (free) to leave it a one score game, seven points to six. Suncroft edged two points ahead with a score of their own before Cian Reilly replied with a free for Kildangan. Approaching half-time Suncroft edged a point ahead again, then hit a two pointer to stretch the lead out to three. Kildangan were competing well all over the field and had kept the game tight despite playing against the elements but disaster struck just on the stroke of half-time when a Suncroft move ended with the ball being crashed to the net to give them a six point half-time lead on a scoreline of Suncroft 2-7 Kildangan 0-7.

Kildangan now playing with the elements, knew they would need to cut into the Suncroft lead early in the half. It was Suncroft however who stretched out the lead further with a point from a free. Kildangan answered with a Mark O Donavan free of our own. The sides were going point for point with Cian and Killian Reilly matching two Suncroft scores. A brace of Kildangan points from Eanna Sherlock and Bryan Adams narrowed the gap to four points as Kildangan clawed their way back into the game. With ten minutes remaining a Suncroft point, followed by a goal palmed to the net looked like it had settled the game, with Kildangan now eight points adrift.  Kildangan weren't finished however and Mark O Donavan broke up the middle for a Kildangan point and when Eanna Sherlock landed a massive two pointer it was now all Kildangan. Ryan Moran turned his man to kick a point off the right. With Kildangan pushing forward we were almost caught out for another goal. Adam Balmer however brought off a superb save to keep the game alive. Ryan Moran kicked another point from play for Kildangan, however Kildangan left their final push a little too late with the final whistle sounding to leave the final score Suncroft 3-12 Kildangan 0-17.

The team will be disappointed with the loss as there is no doubt they gave as good as they got against Intermediate side Suncroft. The team are out again next Saturday evening with a home game against Ardclough as we seek to collect our first points of the league.
