A determined Minor performance in round 5 of the league ended in defeat to Aylmer Gaels 3-07 to Abbey rangers 2-06.
With the Castlemitchell boys settled into the Abbey Rangers minor setup, at this stage, they were delighted to play for the first time in Castlemitchell against Aylmer Gaels (the Straffan, Ardclough and Rathcoffey amalgamation).
The game opened with a point to Aylmer Gaels, that was followed up immediately by a brilliant point, slotted over by Abbey Rangers. A further point was added by Abbey Rangers to go ahead in the first quarter. However, as the game settled, Aylmer Gaels rallied to score a point and a goal in quick succession to get a grip on the first half. As the first half was ending, Abbey Rangers received a black card reducing them to 14 men for the last 5 minutes of the half. Down to 14 the Abbey Rangers boys worked hard in their defensive lines and managed to concede only 2 further points while also scoring 2 points before the end of the half. A low scoring first half ended Aylmer Gaels 1-04 to Abbey rangers 0-04
As the second half got under way Abbey Rangers received a second black card reducing them to 13 men for the next 5 minutes. The Abbey Rangers boys refused to give in and managed to keep Aylmer Gaels scoreless until the first black card player returned to the field. A huge defensive effort was displayed from the boys.
As the Abbey Rangers boys were tiring from their efforts, Aylmer Gaels were the first to get the score board moving again scoring 2 points followed by 2 goals making a gap on the scoreboard that would be difficult to close.
With Abbey Rangers then restored to 15 they began to come back and 2 excellent goals, 1 from Tomas Dunne and 1 from Devan Abbey reduced the deficit. It was all Abbey Rangers pressure from this point, however Aylmer Gaels held out for a deserved win.
Best on the day for Abbey Rangers were Ben O’Conor and Jack Fagan in defence, Seanie Haughton and Oisin O’Reilly in mid field, Devan Abbey and Tomas Dunne in forwards.
With available numbers low on the day, a mention for Lucas Abbey who joined the minor team for the first time to help out in the forward line.
Scorers for Abbey Rangers:
Devan Abbey 1-04
Tomas Dunne 1-01
Alex Cullen 0-01
