Abbey Rangers U14s travelled to Athgarvan for their league semi-final. The last time the sides met, Athgarvan ran out comfortable winners by 25 points, but this time the Rangers were determined to put in a much stronger performance.
Sam won the throw-in and quickly found Cameron, who opened the scoring with a well-taken point. Athgarvan responded strongly with two goals before Oisin got Rangers back on the scoreboard with a point.
Although Athgarvan held the advantage, the Rangers defence worked tirelessly throughout the first half. Aidan produced an excellent block-down, while Seamie, Daragh and Oscar all made important contributions after coming into the game. Sam repeatedly carried the ball forward, but Rangers struggled to turn promising attacks into scores.
Athgarvan added two points before Josh converted a free for Rangers. Another Athgarvan goal followed, but Zach reduced the deficit with a free just before the break.
Half-time: Athgarvan 3-2, Abbey Rangers 0-4.
After a positive half-time team talk, Rangers emerged determined to close the gap. Athgarvan started the second half strongly, adding a point from the throw-in and following up with a couple more scores. The Rangers defence came under sustained pressure, but Aidan, Sean, Seamie, Daragh, Oscar and Jake stood firm with some superb defending.
Midway through the second half, the comeback began. Fionn kicked an excellent point before Zach followed up with a goal from a free. Rangers continued to build momentum points from Josh & Oisin (free). Leon showed great awareness to pounce on a breaking ball and bury a goal
Sam worked tirelessly throughout and his efforts were rewarded when he found Josh, who was pulled down in the square. The referee pointed to the spot, and Jake calmly converted the penalty to leave just two points between the teams.
Oisin then converted another free to narrow the gap to a single point. Unfortunately, Rangers suffered a setback when Oscar was fouled and injured. With time running out, Jake had a chance from a free, but Athgarvan regained possession and broke forward to score the insurance point that secured their victory.
Despite the defeat, this was an outstanding team performance from Abbey Rangers. Every player gave their all, and the lads can be incredibly proud of their efforts and the determination they showed in mounting such a spirited comeback.
Special mentions go to Seamie, Sam, Daragh, Jake and Josh for their excellent performances, while Aidan is our Man of the Match for a superb display in defence.
