Abbey Rangers U14s travelled to Castledermot for the next round of the championship on a dirty evening, with slippery and difficult conditions making for a very physical contest.
Abbey Rangers got off to a flying start, with Sam Worrell opening the scoring with a great point from the throw-in. Castledermot responded with a goal after some slack marking in our defence, before putting further pressure on our backline and adding another goal.
Abbey Rangers responded well, with Josh O’Rourke setting up Zach McNamara for a well-taken goal. Castledermot quickly cancelled it out with another goal, but Abbey Rangers continued to battle. Oscar Law was excellent on our kick-outs, while Josh O’Rourke, Oisin McWey and Cameron all added points, leaving seven points between the sides at half-time.
Abbey Rangers came out strongly in the second half. Oscar Law, Senan O’Tuama and Sean Gleeson linked up brilliantly with the forwards, and substitute Brendan Fitzgerald made an immediate impact, scoring a superb goal to bring us right back into the game. Brendan followed that up with a point, but Castledermot responded with another goal.
Sean Casey then won a fantastic ball and set up Brendan Fitzgerald for his second goal of the game, as Abbey Rangers continued to fight their way back into the contest.
It was a super physical game, with both teams giving everything. Abbey Rangers managed to reduce the deficit to just four points, but Castledermot finished strongly and added another goal in the final 10 minutes to close out the game with a seven-point victory.
Final score 6-9 to 3-11
Despite the result, there were lots of positives to take from the performance, with the lads showing great character, determination and fight throughout.

Seamie Fitzpatrick, Sean Gleeson and Sean Casey were excellent in defence, while Senan O’Tuama & Sam Worrell did super in midfield. Josh O’Rourke, Oisin McWey, Zach McNamara and Brendan Fitzgerald worked tirelessly up front.
