Junior "A" Championship
Semi-Final
1-10-26
Robertstown 0-13 Kildangan 0-7
In a repeat of last years semi-final, our Senior team closed out the year with a defeat to Robertstown under lights in Hawkfield on Thursday last.
It felt like the winter had well and truly set in as our seniors squared up to Robertstown on what looked likely to be a tight encounter. Playing against a strong cross-field wind, Kildangan got off the mark after 10 mins when Killian Scully forced a turn over on his opponent before the ball was brought forward 50m, which allowed Cian Reilly to kick the opening score from a free. Robertstown answered quickly with a two pointer followed by a point to take a two point lead. Cian Reilly then cut the gap to one for Kildangan approaching 15 mins gone. Kildangan were playing well at this point with Killian Reilly coming close with a goal chance. Kildangan found themselves in again minutes later and looked like to won a penalty when a Kildangan forward in possession was bundled down in the square from behind. The referee saw things differently and played on. Robertstown took the ball downfield and added a point to leave them two ahead after 20 mins. A Robertstown goal chance was palmed wide before Aaron Schofield cut the gap to the minimum with a nice point. Robertstown replied with a point before Kildangan came close with two possible goal chances when long balls over the Robertstown defense failed to reach the Kildangan forwards inside. Robertstown tacked on another point before half-time to leave the score Robertstown 0-6 Kildangan 0-3.
The second-half began with Robertstown stretching the lead out to four with a point. Cian Reilly floated a massive two pointer in on the breeze after a foul on Joey Walsh to cut the gap to two points. Robertstown answered by kicking two points, one a tap over free for a "breach". Alan Donaher then kept Kildangan hopes alive with 15 mins remaining by kicking a nice point. That's as close as Kildangan got in the second half as Robertstown stretched away, kicking four of the last five points. Kildangan's sole reply came from Daragh Murphy after good work between Joey Walsh and Luke McKenna. This left the full-time score Robertstown 0-13 Kildangan 0-7.
This wasn't the way team would have chosen to end a season of many positives. However, valuable experienced was gained playing quality teams throughout the year. Kildangan can point to first-half goal chances not being taken and the penalty not awarded being the moments that defined the game. The team and management can now take a well earned rest, and come back fitter, stronger and more experienced next season.
