Maynooth 6-5 Kildangan 6-8

Kildangans quest to put back to back wins together ended in controversy in Maynooth on Friday evening when a dispute arose at the final whistle with Kildangan mentors having scored the game in a 3 point win for Kildangan but the referee scoring it in a draw initially and then a one point win to Maynooth.

The drama began when on arrival in Maynooth we were informed that the referee assigned to the game could not make it but another referee was on the way. Throw-in time of 6.30 arrived and no replacement referee had arrived and couldn't be contacted by phone so both mentors agreed that both sides would provide a referee to referee a half each with Maynooth taking the first half. This didn't seem to hamper Kildangan who raced in to a 2-4 to 0-0 lead with scores coming from Jack Fitzpatrick, Alice Mahon, Josh O Rourke, Oisin McWey and Casey McEvoy MacCullagh. Maynooth hit back with a goal of their own shortly afterwards. It was at this point the official replacement referee arrived close to half-time and was presumably at this point given the in-correct score by the stand-in Maynooth referee in the change over. Play continued to half-time with Maynooth coming into the game and adding 3 goals, several of which were of the lucky variety with shots for points dropping into the Kildangan net. Kildangan added two further goals of their own to leave the half-time score: Maynooth  4-0 Kildangan 4-4.

The second half was an evenly contested affair with Jack Fitzpatrick and Niamh Gleeson continuing to give Kildangan a strong foothold in mid-field. Maynooth added a further 2-5 in this half with Kildangan adding 3-4 with a final goal poked home by John Gargan seeming to put the icing on the cake. A further Kildangan goal was not given when the Maynooth goalie fumbled a shot with the ball rolling into the back of the net before being scooped back out. This goal that was not given would prove crucial at the final whistle. Kildangan eased home from there to what looked like a comfortable victory, that was until the final whistle and confusion ensued with Kildangan scoring the game Maynooth 6-5 Kildangan 6-8 but the referee saying different.

Kildangan can be very proud of our display despite the obvious disappointment at the final whistle. We made the long trip to Maynooth with an almost full squad and hopefully this will serve as motivation for everyone for the Summer League and Championship ahead. Every Kildangan player upped their game from the previous win against Ellistown. Daragh Coughlan pulled of some good saves with many Maynooth shots dropping short and needing to be dealt with. Jake Curran, Annabelle Torpey and Sophie Stynes were rock solid in the full back line. Senan O Tuama, Sam Worrell and Josh O Rourke defended and raided forward when the opportunities arose. Jack Fitzpatrick and Niamh Gleeson are forming a formidable midfield partnership with their tackling and ball carrying abilities. The half forward line of Seamie Fitzpatrick, Oisin McWey and Alice Mahon were always showing for the ball and good for a score. The corner forwards Sophie Murray and Tommy Donagher gave dangerman Casey McEvoy MacCullagh plenty of support closer to goals. Our subs of Aidan Casey, Abigail Fenlon and John Gargan more than playing their part and kept Kildangan pushing forward right to the end.
