Finnery Gaels u23 Final
Cappagh 1.11 - 1.08 Finnery Gaels
Last Saturday 16th, Finnery Gaels lined out for their u23 county final against Cappagh in the somewhat unusual setting of Ellistown. With the queue of traffic backed up both sides of the gates from as early as 17:30 it was clear that there was going to be a big crowd. And that there was. With the players in position and the sidelines packed it was time for throw-in.
It took a couple of minutes for the opening score of the game, but the Kildangan and Nurney supporters were not disappointed as Mark O’Donovan opened proceedings with a rocket of a goal. Cappagh soon responded with a point. Finnery Gaels then went on to score the next 3 points unanswered thanks to Ewan Morris, Oisin Irvin and Cian Reilly. Cappagh brought the game back to 3 points and both sides traded scores til half time keeping the distance of 3 points at half time with the Finnery Gaels points coming from Alan Donoher, Cian Reilly and Luke McKenna. Some great defending pressure by Tadgh Hagney and Eoghan O’Fearghaill can also be accredited for the half time lead.
Half Time Score:
Cappagh 0.06 - 1.06 Finnery Gaels
Cappagh came out from half time and flipped the game on it’s head scoring 1.04 unanswered. It was a dog fight from there onwards and with the sticky conditions it slowed down the pace of the game, something that didn’t suit the young and agile Finnery Gaels team. Despite Finery Gaels’ constant pressure in the last 7/8 minutes, producing a point from Joey Walsh and another from Mark O’Donovan, it proved too tall a task and the clock ran out.
It was a disappointing result for Finnery Gaels and was definitely a game well within the grasp of the Kildangan and Nurney men. Having missed out on the final in 2023 and losing the 2024 final by just 3 points, there is definitely a feeling amongst the players and supporters that 2025 is the year where Kildangan & Nurney get the job done. Thanks to all players and supporter!
Man of the Match: Luke McKenna; Luke played his role as a sweeper down to a T. He cut out ball after ball and played a great counter attacking game with several bursting runs up the pitch and creating several scores.
