Abbey Rangers U14s made the trip to Suncroft this afternoon to play a rescheduled league game — a fixture that brought back memories for many of last year’s U12 final, where Suncroft edged it after extra time.
It was a tough start, with Suncroft striking early for a goal and quickly adding a point. Abbey Rangers responded through Sam Worrell, who opened their account, before Cameron Kavanagh began to influence the game. Winning key possession, Cameron supplied excellent ball into Fionn McPaul, who converted two superb points in succession.
The defence — led by Oscar Law, Seamie Fitzpatrick, and Daragh Coughlan — settled well under pressure. Up front, Josh O’Rourke showed great initiative with a strong solo run to set up Brendan Fitzgerald for a point, before Sam Worrell added another fine score.
Goalkeeper Rory Grattan made two crucial saves before the break, including an outstanding point-blank stop. Josh O’Rourke closed the half with a converted free, leaving Abbey Rangers ahead 0-6 to 1-1.
Abbey started the second half strongly, with Josh O’Rourke again making an impact — this time finishing a brilliant solo run with a goal. Suncroft responded with a point, but Abbey kept control through scores from Senan O Tuama and Jake Curran, who showed great determination to win possession and drive forward.
The final 10 minutes saw heavy pressure from Suncroft, who added two points, but Abbey’s defence stood firm. Jake Curran produced a vital block, while Aidan Casey won a key ball and delivered an excellent pass to Josh. Sam Worrell added the final point to secure the win.
A well-earned victory built on a solid defensive display, with standout performances from Jake Curran, Seamie Fitzpatrick, and Oscar Law. Sam Worrell worked hard in midfield, and Josh O’Rourke worked tirelessly in attack. However, the Player of the Match award goes to Cameron Kavanagh for his all-around influence and quality on the ball
