Monasterevin 2-11 Kildangan 0-10
The sizable Kildangan following that made their way to Monasterevin for this final league fixture of the year were left disappointed as Kildangan went down by seven points to the home team is breezy but dry conditions on Thursday last.
Despite Monasterevin requiring a win to secure a league final place, it was Kildangan , playing with a decent breeze who opened the brighter. Paddy Neary swung over a two pointer in the opening minutes to give his side the perfect start. It was followed soon after by a Mark O'Donavan point as a goal chance flashed over. Kildangans good start continued when Mark O'Donavan put over a two pointer off the ground to extend Kildangans lead to five points. Monasterevin grew into the game slowely and narrowed the gap with three points on the trot. A goal for Monasterevin moments later put them a point ahead after a forward was allowed solo in from the right wing to put a shot low past Adam Balmer. Kildangan were now struggling to break down a massed Monasterevin defence, while at the other end Monasterevin picked off points from frees to extend the lead out to four points. Monasterevin pulled clear just before half-time when they were awarded a somewhat contentious penalty, after a push in the Kildangan square after play had seemed to have already have moved on when the incident occurred. The penalty was dispatched despite the best efforts of Balmer in the Kildangan goal. This left the half-time score Monasterevin 2-7 Kildangan 0-5.
There were obviously harsh words had in the Kildangan dressing room at half-time as Kildangan were delayed re-emerging for the second half. Monasterevin extended their lead with two points early in the half. Kildangan were battling harder this half and points by Killian Reilly and Aaron Schofield narrowed the gap back to eight. Despite playing with the wind scores dried up for Monasterevin as Kildangan began to get into things around the middle with Sean Behan, Joey Walsh and Eoghan O'Fearghail showing well. Monasterevin added a point but Kildangan answered with two Cian Reilly frees on the right after good work by Devan Abbey. The sides swapped points again in the closing minutes to leave a final score of Monasterevin 2-11 Kildangan 0-10.
The game itself never reached the heights of the previous encounter. Kildangan never got the measure of the massed opposition defence in the first half, despite a very bright start. The second half gave a much truer reflection on where the sides stand with the half being tied at four points a piece. The league itself was very positive overall, with progress being made in a top four finish. Attention now turns to preparation for the Junior Championship with stern tests awaiting but tests Kildangan will not fear after their good league showing. See the dates below.
